X'mas!

In Russia? NOoooooooooo it is NOT on the 25th of December.. Majority of the russians r orthodox christians so they do not follow the typical x'mas day.
The Russian Orthodox Church still uses the old Julian calendar; therefore, its Christmas celebration falls on January 7th, 13 days behind the West. It's a day of both solemn ritual and joyous celebration. Before this date, Orthodox Russians fast for six weeks. This Fast is completely vegetarian and requires that there must not be any parties or gatherings. After the 1917 Revolution, Christmas was banned throughout Russia, along with other religious celebrations. It wasn't until 75 years later, in 1992, that the holiday was openly observed. Today, it's once again celebrated in grand fashion, with the faithful participating in an all-night Mass in incense-filled Cathedrals amidst the company of the painted icons of Saints.

Christmas in Russia is associated with a number of other practices, which represent a blend of tradition from Russia's Christian and pre-Christian past. It was once common practice, on Christmas Eve, for groups of people masquerading as manger animals to travel from house to house singing songs known as kolyadki. Some kolyadki were pastoral carols to the baby Jesus, while others were homages to the ancient solar goddess Kolyada, who brings the lengthening days of sunlight through the winter. In return for their songs, the singers were offered food and coins, which they gladly accepted before moving on to the next home.

Throughout Russia, after Christmas Eve services, people carrying candles, torches, and homemade lanterns parade around the church, just as their grandparents and great-grandparents did in the past. The Krestny Khod procession is led by the highest-ranking member of the Russian Orthodox Church. After the procession completes its circle around the church, the congregation re-enters and sings several carols and hymns before going home for a late Christmas Eve dinner.

Christmas Eve dinner is meatless but festive. The most important dish is a special porridge called kutya. It is made of berries, wheat or other grains that symbolize hope and immortality, and honey and poppy seeds that ensure happiness, success, and untroubled rest. A ceremony involving the blessing of the home is frequently observed. The kutya is eaten from a common dish to symbolize unity. Some families used to throw a spoonful of kutya up to the ceiling. According to the tradition, if kutya sticks there will be a great honey harvest.

And to the orthodox christians their x'mas figure is not Santa Claus but jus as similar their x'mas icon is called Ded Moroz.. otherwise known as Grandfather Frost. He gives presents to children on a personal basis and he does this with the help of his granddaughter, Snegurochka or otherwise known as the Snow Maiden.

Thats Grandfather Frost..

And this is Snow Maiden..

Traditionally, the "Holy Supper" ( which is served on x'mas eve ) consists of 12 different foods, symbolic of the 12 Apostles. Although there was also some variation in the foods from place to place and village to village, the following is a good summary of what is typically served.

1) Mushroom soup with zaprashka (or Sauerkraut soup)
2) Lenten bread ("pagach")
3) Chopped garlic
4) Honey
5) Baked fish
6) Fresh Oranges, Figs and Dates
7) Nuts
8) Kidney beans (cooked slowly all day) seasoned with shredded potatoes, lots of garlic, salt and pepper to taste
9) Peas
10) Parsley Potatoes (boiled new potatoes with chopped parsley and margarine)
11) Bobal'ki (small biscuits combined with sauerkraut or poppy seed with honey)
12) Red Wine

And check out this video i found about a particularly interesting x'mas decoration..

Grey Anatomy?

Ok this is nothing to do wit the series Grey's Anatomy..

This is about Human Anatomy!

Yea I jus finished the 1st half of myology controls ytd.

Now most of us will feel that the studying Anatomy can be a real pain in the ass. I have to admit it IS a pain in the ass.

BUT there is always a positive side of looking at it.

U dun have to stress urself up so much studying Anatomy all nite ( though i fell sick studying it last nite >.< )

The secret to studying Anatomy effectively ( for me la.. XD ) is to loosen up a bit in between studies. Its NOT that bad studying Anatomy actually..

When u feel like crashing down n giving up jus shut ur book n do sumtin fun. Here's an example of sumtin i did which i am not proud of HAHA..

Thats is to kacau other ppl studying XD lol it really works! it rids u of stress and at the same time u help each other loosen up while studying. obviously u gotta noe who to kacau n not la.. if u go kacau those super stressed up ( usually the last minute-ers ) they'll shoot u down n u'll feel worse instead of better.. so make ur target wisely!

Ok so that was the preparation part.. The nxt day ( which was ytd ) I sat for my controls. Ok i was freakin out. I realised i couldnt rmbr all the origins n insertion points of the muscles. But then again.. i cud rmbr them after all. HAHA.. we were supposed to go to the cadaver n point out the muscles for our oral. but since all the cadavers were occupied by the other classes we went back up to our class n did a typical oral exam without the cadaver.

Yes our dear fren here was supposed to be our exam paper..

So i was surprisingly not nervous while waiting for my turn to answer the questions that my lecturer is waiting to bombard me wit. When it was my turn, i approach his desk wit the usual dazzling smile on my face XD haha.. He asked me bout the pectoralis major muscle of the thorax, the erector spinae muscle of the back and the muscles of the abdomen.. which i breezed thru all.. n wadda u noe.. i got a 5!!! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~~ at that instant i wasnt sick anymore. HAHA.. fever sore throat all gone!

After class we went down to the cadaver to learn bout the muscles of the forearm. OMG wei the way my lecturer handles the cadaver is.. AWFUL! keep using the forceps to fling the dead, clammy hands around like a rag doll. unfortunately as i was the most front wan the hand ter-kena my hand which i washed THOROUGHLY after the lesson. Felt so rough wei *shudder*

Muscles of forearm:

And compare it wit the actual muscles we have to learn frm..

LOL MMA.. pls get a fresher cadaver for us! there is nothing left to see on this guy!

Damn Protozoans..

and DAMN u English-illiterate Russians.. wat kinda answer do u wan me to give if u ask me a question in gibberish??!! damnit a 4 for Biology aint sumtin for me to celebrate anymore.

Well say hello to my dear frens who have been so kind as to take up my whole weekend..

Meet..

The..

PROTOZOANS!!!

Say hi to Mr. Plasmodium. Lets engross ourselves on a lil family history shall we?

This dude rite here is responsible for all Malaria diseases and as most of u all noe.. the final host is the female Anopheles mosquito and the intermediate host is.. Us. But Malaria is divided into 3 types: Tertian malaria, Quartan malaria and Quatidia malaria. Tertian is caused by Pl. Vivax, Pl. Ovale and Pl. Falciparum. Symptoms are recurring fever every 48 hrs. Well generally, the parasites attack ur hepatic cells and red blood cells..

Believe me there's more to that to study than wat u see.. so u can imagine how much we've to stuff into our head..

2nd fren..

Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Protozoa
Phylum Sarcomastigophora
Subphylum: Sarcodina
Class: Rhizopoda
Order: Amoebina
Genus: Amoeba
Species: Proteus

Amoeba proteus.. totally harmless to us. LOL..

3rd fren..

Aaaah.. this dude is nasty. Entamoeba histolytica.. To all u pork-lovers out there.. beware this microscopic killer.

Subkingdom: Protozoa
Phylum: Sarcomastigophora
Subphylum: Sarcodina
Class: Rhizopoda
Order: Amoebina
Family: Entamoebidae
Genus: Entamoeba
Species: Histolytica

found worldwide.. enters ur system via contaminated food and water. It feeds on the cells of ur large intestine.. specifically at ur mucosa n submucosa layers, making "soup" out of it.. YUMMY.. and forming ulcers which discharges blood. frm there it enters ur bloodstream and attacks ur liver, lungs, spleen and brain.. producing abscesses and causing pain. ultimately dissolving ur blood vessels and causing fatal haemorrhage.

SYMPTOMS are abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea alterating wit constipation and chronic diarrhoea wit mucous and blood discharges.

4th dude..

The Paramecium caudatum.. another harmless protozoa we're forced to study..

5th fren..

Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Protozoa
Phylum: Ciliaphora
Class: Ciliata
Order: Trichostomatida
Genus: Balantidium
Species: Coli

Another fella for pork-lovers to be afraid of..

Found worldwide. Most common in digestive tracts of pigs.. Escapes via faeces in encysted form. enters human by eating improperly washed food. It normally feeds on ur faecal matter ( thats ur shit in layman terms ).. and sometimes it attacks ur intestinal wall causing ulcers which leads to the development of dysentery and finally.. DEATH.

Ok.. Tr. Gambiense can oni be found in Africa and Tr. Cruzi can oni be found in Central and South America.

The Tr. Gambiense enters the human body via bite of Tse-tse fly and has 3 stages to the disease it causes, the African sleeping sickness. 1st stage is when the wound is itchy. 2nd stage is when u have gambian fever. during 3rd stage the parasite enters ur cerebrospinal fluid and causes African sleeping sickness. Later on patient will lose consciousness and enter a coma n eventually.. die.

Tr. Cruzi enters our system by the bite of the blood-sucking bed bugs and causes Chagas disease. It causes fever, oedema and enlargement of spleen and liver.

No. 7..

Я Любить Анатомии Чѐлобѐка!!!

Ok my internet connection was expired for a few days now..

Here's wat happened these past few days..

Thursday ( 27/11/08 )

Anatomy class.. finally get to see a cadaver!!

But.. Its not wat we expected..

The cadaver is practically.. ROTTEN.

I jus hope our anatomy oral examination does not involve the cadaver.

Here's how the cadaver looks like..

THE FOLLOWING IMAGE MIGHT BE DISTURBING TO SOME.. HARAP MAKLUM!

Scroll down quickly if u dun wanna see it!

Here's the dude. We can barely study his muscles. There's practically nothing left!

The other anatomy lecturer showing us the facial muscles.. Its all shredded!! Cant see nothing!

We ( the ones who cud stand the smell ) stayed back after the lecturer left tryin to identify the muscles during our break time. Thats us with the 1st cadaver showing us the muscles of the back.

And thats the anterior part of the 2nd cadaver.. ( notice the gloved hand at the bottom of the pic.. proof that the cadaver is a dude )

After we returned to class i still had some spare time so i went over to my frens' class and i saw this..

YUMMY.... You DEFINITELY noe wat is that..

Ok then after that our lecturer went off topic ( as usual ) about India and showed off his new camera ( Canon ) and camcorder ( Sony ).
He jus randomly came into class with the box and started taking pics of us but unfortunately he doesn't noe how to operate his camera.. LOL wei n he got his favourite student to show him how n take a pic or two for him wit half the class.

Clearly he doesn't noe how to operate it either.. LOL.

The he spent the rest of the lesson amusing himself wit his camera.. He asked us to "self-study".. which he always does. haha funny fella..

Friday ( 28/11/08 )

The day went on as usual.. With Gen Chem in the morning and Physics lecture in the afternoon. Nothing interesting till i was on the way back with Puay Hua.

At Kurskaya Station.. i was walking towards the train. Suddenly someone grabbed my hand. I was so scared i tot i was gonna get mugged or sumtin.. But turns out that guy asked me in Russian.. "R u frm M'sia?" WOW. Surprised but relieved altogether. I was surprised i understood his Russian n capable of answering him back in Russian too. I replied " Yes i'm frm Malaysia". He said he was frm Bangkok and asked whether i'm studying in MGU.. I said NO i am studying in MMA. Then he asked whether i'm studying engineering but i said no i'm studying medicine n he smiled n asked me wat yr am i in. I said i'm in yr 1 n he stated he's a computer programmer working in Moscow. Then he advised me to do well in my studies and master Russian Language better. We shook hands and parted ways. That incident made my day. Always a pleasure to meet a frenly face close to home..

Went home wit a smile on my face after that..

A frenly snowball showdown

OK. Wat happens when u mix a mini blizzard with absolutely jakun m'sian students?

Allow me to illustrate to u..

Roll up a HUGE snow rocking chair..

Or perhaps.. Jus sit down n laugh to yourself in the snow..

And maybe.. jus maybe.. set free the inner child within u..

Who wud forget bout the snowmen?

Perhaps.. a frenly snowball fight? Yeah thats wat we did alrite.

This is our battlefield..

These are our patriots..

And our nemesis

The outcome:

Total annihilation.. NOT~~

But someone frm another grp who had their snowball fight b4 us actually got hospitalised. no idea who is it but they must be really engrossed in their match and got over-enthusiastic..

However we noe how to play it clean so all of us returned to our hostel after that unscathed.

Here's how we keep it real..

Hurl generous portions of snowballs to someone..

Dodge a projectile if u have to..

Help the fallen..

BUT no one seems to be interested in helping me. I've been gangbanged 4 TIMES damnit.. Y ME??!! LOL..

LOL but all is fair in love and war..
No one got hurt and everyone returned home relieved of the exam stress..

BUT that was wat happened last sunday.

Well lets see.. This week.. On Monday I had Bioorganic Chemistry controls.. Not sure of the outcome yet..
and on Tuesday ( ytd ), i had my Latin controls. Got a 5 for it. haha another 5 in the pocket! After Latin i had Russian class for 2 hrs straight and returned to my room EXHAUSTED. The oni way to relax was to cook myself dinner and finally get to watch a movie.. We medic students do not have much time to spare for such luxuries as watching movies frequently.

So i cooked myself some porridge and laboured my bottoms on the bed and watched..

To those who have not watched this movie yet.. I strongly recommend u to give it a try. Its a very interesting movie about a man ( William Wilberforce ) who fought hard to abolish the African slave trade and contributed on making our world a better place.

I'm gonna be up all nite studying anatomy for this thurs so.. Peace out!
