Curse of the Pink Eye

I'm sure most overseas students with sinus and allergy problems hate it when their eyes gets itchy n their nose gets clogged up upon arrival on Malaysian soil. Blame it on the humidity n the dust!

Eversince i got home frm Moscow my nose has been blocked 24/7 (pretty much the same situation everytime i'm in Malaysia for the past 20 yrs of my life) and my eyes started to itch like mad.

At 1st i thought it was some normal allergic reaction and i could not be bothered bout it. then it got worse.. with sticky discharges in the morning, difficulty in opening eyelids, occasional blurry vision and of course.. the icky red eye. Thats when i self diagnosed myself with conjunctivitis.

Since i tot this was one of my usual hyper allergic reaction towards dust or what not i started using antiallergic/antiinflammatory eyedrops (Naphazoline Hydrochloride+Pheniramine Maleate to be precise). It did not work. Crossed out allergic conjunctivitis from the differential list.

Sick of the annoying itchiness, i got tired of playing around with self-diagnosing and went to the doctor to confirm it. Doctor confirms the conjunctivitis. Prescribed me with antibiotics and antimicrobial eyedrops. So apparently he tot im having bacterial conjunctivitis.

Applied the Colircusi Gentadexa eyedrops and it soothed the itchiness! for a while that is.. then again now i'm pretty certain its bacterial conjunctivitis. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually recovers within 5 days without medication.. but im having it for bout.. 10 days? better to be safe than sorry :)

What NOT to eat when you are under medication

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, i shall revive this dead blog of mine!

I have lost interest in blogging for the past yr and a half. Hopefully i can keep this up lol.

Well anyway i was watch
ing the series Castle a few days back and i was intrigued at the fact that the murder victim in that series died to balsamic vinegar in reaction to Phenelzine, an antidepressant drug the
victim was on.

So i did a lil research and i found these stuff. Hope it comes in handy if u're under any of these medications.

Ginseng, according to research, can increase blood pressure, making it dangerous for those trying to keep their blood pressure under control. Ginseng, garlic or supplements containing ginger, when taken with the blood-thinning drug, Coumadin, can cause bleeding episodes. In rare cases, ginseng may overstimulate resulting in insomnia. Consuming caffeine with ginseng increases the risk of overstimulation and gastrointestinal upset. Long term use of ginseng may cause menstrual abnormalities and breast tenderness in some women. Ginseng is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.

Garlic capsules combined with diabetes medication can cause a dangerous decrease in blood sugars. Some people who are sensitive to garlic may experience heartburn and flatulence. Garlic has anti-clotting properties.

Aged cheese (brie, parmesan, cheddar and Roquefort), fava beans, sauerkraut, Italian green beans, some beers, red wine, pepperoni and overly ripe avocados should be avoided by people taking MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor antidepressants. The interaction can cause a potentially fatal rise in blood pressure.

Orange juice shouldn't be consumed with antacids containing aluminum. 'The juice increases the absorption of the aluminum. Orange Juice and milk should be avoided when taking antibiotics. The juice's acidity decreases the effectiveness of antibiotics, as does milk.

Milk also doesn't mix with laxatives containing bisacodyl (Correctol and Dulcolax). You might find the laxative works a little "too well" in the morning.

Large amounts of oatmeal and other high-fiber cereals should not be eaten when taking digoxin. The fiber can interfere with the absorption of the drug, making the act of swallowing the pill a waste of time. However, don't stop eating your cereal right away, because that could cause digoxin levels in your system to soar to toxic levels.

Leafy green vegetables, high in vitamin K, should not be taken in great quantities while taking Coumadin. These vegetables could totally negate the affects of the drug and cause blood clotting.

Caffeinated beverages and asthma drugs taken together can cause excessive excitability. Those taking Tagament (Simetidine), quinolone antibiotics (Cipro, Penetrex, Noroxin) and even oral contraceptives should be aware these drugs may cause their cup of coffee to give them more of a Java jolt than they expected.

Grilled meat can lead to problems for those on asthma medications containing theophyllines. The chemical compounds formed when meat is grilled somehow prevent this type of medication from working effectively, increasing the possibility of an unmanageable asthma attack.

Alcoholic beverages tend to increase the depressive effects of medications such as benzodiazepines, antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, muscle relaxants, narcotics, or any drug with sedative actions.

Aspirin can modify the effectiveness of arthritis medications, strong prescription steroids and diuretics. Combining aspirin with diabetic medications can drop blood sugars to dangerous levels. Aspirin can also cause toxicity when taken with glaucoma and anticonvulsant (anti-seizure) drugs and cause bleeding episodes when combined with a blood thinner, like Coumadin.

Raspberries contain a natural salicylate that can cause an allergic reaction in aspirin sensitive people.

And the list goes on and on..

So be mindful of what you eat when you're on certain medications.

Happy eating :)

Friends?

Friends come and go.. but true frens last forever.

such a true statement..

out of all the frens i have in high school.. oni several of them can be considered true frens. most of them give u rubbish like "oh must keep in touch k" or stuff liddat but when u actually made the effort to keep in touch they act all bz on u or wudnt even find time for u. when they're free they wun even bother maintaining contact. or maybe i guess they think they're too good for u.

i guess thats wat most mediocre frens r for rite? the "hi n bye" purpose.

go figure.

i dun wanna be a frog..

1st PROPER physiology class today.

1st experiment too.

experiments on excitable tissues. so we need..

FROGS

quite an interesting experiment today.

walked into the room.

Yuri Vaguine was sitting down. a jar was nxt to him wit a frog in it. without chloroform whatsoever, he took it out wit his bare hands and placed the lower blade of a dissecting scissors in between the frog's jaw, the upper blade placed right behind the frog's eye and CRUNCH off the frog's head. frog's cant feel pain according to my professor. then he destroyed the brain, further cutting the frog's abdomen into 2. then he removed the muscles in the abdominal region to reveal the spine ( vertebral column ) and showed us the meaning of physical stimulation of the nerves. as he slowly destroyed the spine, the frog's legs were twitching.once that was done, he cut off the frog's leg wit the sciatic nerve still attached ( and of course.. a piece of the vertebral column attached to the other end of the sciatic nerve ). he cut off the webbed feet and smiled as he removed the skin and said " like removing tights off women's leg ". no wonder ppl stereotyped doctors as perverts.. =)

that was jus the process. i captured it on video but sadly.. i din save it *sigh*
the interesting part of this experiment is when he attached electrodes in the frog's naked femoral muscle and another pair of electrodes in the sciatic nerve. then we can actually make the muscle twitch at our disposal by adjusting the amount of volts supplied to it.

hehe..

COOL!

Does these spell D-O-O-M ?

New subjects eh?

As excited as everyone will be upon receiving "new" ( new = books i nvr receive b4, not brand new books fresh frm the publisher ) books frm the library, the excitement seemed to have died the instant I was introduced to the subject by my professors.

Scary but interesting subjects..

FINALLY some medical related subjects compared to 1st yr. Plus its so fun to be learning medical care IN a hospital. 1st lesson for Medical Care was goin round the hospital learning bout the organisation of a hospital n being briefed bout the work system in a ward. N we learnt how to use a wheelchair properly. Haha..

Its been a week but the workload has already piled up. Work so much till everyone sleeps in a funny way. In a hostel full of medical hostel u can expect to see funny sleeping antiques like sleep scolding, sleep walking, sleep talking, SLEEP SINGING ( i heard my bro hummed negaraku in his sleep b4 according to his roommates ) and many more la..

Since young my dad mentioned i slept in a Buddha position b4.. i cant imagine myself in that position. well my bro took a pic of me in one -.-

I guess its revenge for the video i took of him >=)

Well anyway.. there's always a nice rainbow after a heavy downpour rite? well my rainbow is 90210 season 2 !!!!!!! WOOOHOOO starts today!!! XD

k la have to study for my Physiology MCQ tmr.

Peace out
